In Mykolaiv, an intoxicated minivan driver struck a scooter rider and fled. He then drove into a fence and fled again
The victim is in serious condition, the driver faces up to three years
In the evening of July 30 in Mykolaiv, a minivan driver, while intoxicated, struck the rider of an electric scooter and then fled the scene. The victim was hospitalized in serious condition.
The road traffic accident occurred at about 22:20 on Malko-Tyrnivska Street in the area of house No. 4. The 27-year-old driver of a Mitsubishi Grandis collided with an electric scooter ridden by a 44-year-old man.
After the collision the minivan driver left the scene. After driving a short distance away, he lost control and crashed into the fence of a private house, after which he fled again.
The electric scooter rider, with bodily injuries, was taken to a medical facility where he was later hospitalized. His condition is currently assessed as serious.
Police quickly identified the driver of the Mitsubishi Grandis and located him at his place of residence. Law enforcement officers also found obvious signs of intoxication. The medical test showed 1.58 per mille of alcohol.
Investigators of the department for investigating crimes in the field of transport of the regional investigation directorate of the police detained the fleeing driver under Article 208 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine.
A criminal proceeding was opened on the fact of the accident with the preliminary qualification — part 1 of Article 286-1 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. It concerns violation of road traffic safety rules by persons operating vehicles while intoxicated, which caused the victim serious bodily injury.
The article’s sanction provides for up to three years imprisonment and deprivation of the right to drive vehicles for a term of three to five years. It is currently being decided whether to notify the detainee of suspicion. The pre-trial investigation is ongoing.
