In the Mykolaiv region, a court sentenced a driver to five years in prison after he, while intoxicated, fatally ran over his father. The victim died from his injuries in a medical facility.

The road traffic accident occurred in September 2024 near the village of Hannivka of the Sofiivska community in Bashtanka district.

That day the 37-year-old man was working in the fields with his father and consuming alcoholic beverages. Afterwards, while driving a Mercedes-Benz Vito, he began reversing and ran over his father, who was behind the vehicle.

As a result of an examination, the driver was found to have 1.45 per mille of alcohol. On the day of the accident, investigators of Police Unit No. 1 of the Bashtanka District Police Department detained him in the course of proceedings and informed him of suspicion under Part 3 of Article 286-1 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.

Initially the court imposed a preventive measure on the suspect in the form of detention for a period of two months. The preventive measure was later changed to house arrest.

In December 2024, police investigators completed and sent the indictment to the prosecutor’s office. The prosecutor’s office forwarded the indictment to the court for consideration on the merits.

The court has now found the defendant guilty of violating traffic safety or vehicle operation rules by a person who was driving a vehicle in a state of alcohol intoxication and caused the victim’s death. He was sentenced to five years of imprisonment.

The first-instance court’s verdict will come into legal force after the deadline for filing an appeal has expired, if no appeal is filed. If an appeal is lodged, the decision will take effect after the appellate court’s ruling, unless it is overturned.
