"The bus is on the map but not at the stop": Mykolaiv residents complain about GPS glitches in public transport
GPS misleads passengers: complaints about routes No. 1 and No. 79
Residents of Mykolaiv complained about malfunctioning GPS tracking of public transport. According to passengers, buses are shown in mobile apps as being on the route or already at the stop, although in fact the vehicle is not there.
Relevant reports appeared in the Facebook group Contact Center at the Mykolaiv City Council. In particular, Kateryna Tyshchenko reported problems with bus route №1, which connects the plant “Okean” with the Ternivka neighborhood.
“The GPS tracking shows that the bus is already at the stop, although in fact it isn’t there”, — wrote the resident.
According to her, this situation has occurred repeatedly, causing passengers to be unable to leave for Ternivka. Other users reported similar problems with the display of bus №79.
The complaints were responded to by the press secretary of KP “Mykolaivpastrans”, Kateryna Stokolyas. She explained that the enterprise does not control third-party mobile apps, but only provides them with information about bus movement. According to her, during air raid alerts GPS trackers are muted for safety reasons. After the signal is restored, the equipment does not always start correctly, which can cause vehicles to be shown with a delay or remain on the map in the wrong place. Kateryna Stokolyas added that in Mykolaiv there are certain areas where buses can temporarily disappear from the map even without an alert being announced.
Passengers were advised to use the “Transport movement online” on the official website of KP “Mykolaivpastrans” section. The enterprise’s page offers an interactive map that should show the locations of city buses in real time.
