Mykolaiv is preparing a lawsuit against the parents of the vandals. Teenagers are being offered to work off their debt at municipal enterprises and funeral services
They were identified on camera; the mayor proposes officially hiring the minors under employment contracts so they can earn money to help cover the city's costs
In Mykolaiv, during a staff meeting on Monday, June 15, Mayor Oleksandr Senkevych said that because the parents of the minors refused to compensate for repairs to damaged equipment in the shelter near a public transport stop, the city is preparing lawsuits, and the teenagers themselves are being offered temporary employment at municipal enterprises so they can work off the amount of the damage.
The mayor explained that this concerns an incident in the shelter near the public stop where teenagers destroyed part of the equipment, but their parents refused to pay the restoration costs, so the city council will go to court, and at the same time the option is being considered that if the adults do not pay the debt, the teenagers themselves could work it off at the city’s enterprises.
“Parents should pay for their children for what we had to restore this equipment, then the lesson will be complete. Not just that we caught them on camera and identified them. Let them work it off. If these children are old enough to break equipment in this shelter, we can find them work, and they can work at our municipal enterprises. They can perform hard work and receive payment for it,” — said Oleksandr Senkevych.
The mayor outlined possible places for such work, including the municipal enterprise “ELU Avtodorih”, where teenagers could be engaged in cleaning storm drains in the Lisky neighborhood, as well as the municipal enterprise “Ritual Services” as another option for temporary employment.
“It’s fine there now, the ground is soft and warm, you can work. I’m serious,” — said Oleksandr Senkevych.
He said the teenagers are expected to be officially employed under labor contracts so they can legally earn money and cover the damages caused to the city.
“Only through physical labor can you understand that what they did was wrong. It will also serve as an example to others: if you cause damage to the city, you can work it off,” — added Oleksandr Senkevych.
