Last year’s record heat and prolonged lack of precipitation severely hit Mykolaiv’s greenery. Remote squares, where it is impossible to promptly provide regular watering, were especially affected.

This was reported during an online briefing 10 June 2026 by the director of KP “Mykolaiv Parks” Dmytro Chuchmai.

Residents separately drew attention to the situation in the Korabelnyi District. In particular, in the square “Metallurg” only in one year, according to residents, more than 25 young and mature trees completely dried up. Among them are poplars and birches.

A similar problem with the drying out of greenery was recorded in the square “Vitovskyi”.

Residents ask to pay more attention to watering green areas and to plant young trees in place of those that have already dried up.

The director of KP “Mykolaiv Parks” Dmytro Chuchmai explained why watering large areas only with water tankers is practically impossible.

“Today the company’s employees are carrying out this work, and it will be fully completed by the end of July. Using this site as an example we plan to launch automatic irrigation in other remote squares as well”

According to Dmytro Chuchmai, water from tankers is primarily directed to flower beds, shrubs and very young saplings, which die very quickly without moisture. At the same time, for large areas and mature trees this method is not effective.

The only effective solution at KP “Mykolaiv Parks” is called automated irrigation. Currently, the company’s specialists are working on restoring the automated irrigation system in the square “Vitovskyi”. It used to operate there, but over time it failed.

Dmytro Chuchmai also noted that there is already a successful example in the city: last year an automatic irrigation system was installed at the Ternivskyi roundabout. According to him, it operates autonomously and has proven effective in preserving lawns and trees.

Recall that in 2020 in Mykolaiv the renovated square “Vitovskyi” was opened, the renovation of which cost about 10 million hryvnias. At that time, in addition to a children’s playground, pedestrian paths and places for recreation, an automated irrigation system was installed there, which was to be powered by solar panels.

Now, after years of operation and the system’s failure, the city is effectively having to return to the issue of automatic irrigation — against the backdrop of mass tree deaths in the squares.
