Quarrel, alcohol and robbery: how a couple's walk in Mykolaiv ended
Took his 16-year-old girlfriend's phone: a repeat offender in Mykolaiv was sentenced to 7.5 years in prison
At the Central District Court of the city of Mykolaiv a verdict was handed down to a 26-year-old man who, during a conflict, took a mobile phone from his 16-year-old girlfriend. For robbery committed during martial law, the court sentenced him to 7 years and 6 months of imprisonment.
The case was heard by Judge Tetiana Fortuna.
As the court established, the incident occurred near one of the buildings on Central Avenue in Mykolaiv. A quarrel broke out between the couple. During the conflict the man grabbed the girl’s bag, from which a Samsung mobile phone fell to the ground. After that he picked up the phone and left the scene.
In court the defendant did not admit guilt and stated that he had no intention of stealing the phone.
The man explained his version of events.
“The night before, my girlfriend and I had been drinking alcoholic beverages at a friend’s place and stayed there overnight. In the morning we went to her relative’s. We were both intoxicated and began to argue. She behaved inappropriately, lunged at me, and her bag fell to the ground several times. I took the phone to teach her a lesson. I said I would return it when she calmed down. I also said that I would be at the bus station, after which I left.”
The victim confirmed that the night before they had been drinking together and stayed overnight at an acquaintance’s, but described the conflict completely differently.
The girl recounted what happened that morning.
“On the way the accused started to bother me; I pushed him away. My bag fell, and the phone fell out of it. He took it and walked away. I tried to get the phone back, but he pushed me away. He did not say where he went next. After that I called the police and reported that he might be at home or near the bus station.”
Having examined the materials of the criminal proceedings and heard the participants in the process, the court concluded that the defendant’s guilt was fully proven.
As a result, the court found the man guilty under Part 4 of Article 186 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine — robbery committed during martial law — and sentenced him to 7 years and 6 months of imprisonment.
