The visit of Trump's special envoys to Kyiv and Moscow was called into question over safety concerns

Special envoys of U.S. President Donald Trump — Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner — planned to visit Kyiv and Moscow on September 5–6. However, the trip came into question after Witkoff, according to The Kyiv Independent, began to have concerns about the visit. Against this background, the parties began discussing alternative options for the plan.

A source for the publication reported that the Russian side does not want the American representatives to come to Kyiv. According to him, Witkoff is highly sensitive to moods in Russia, where the envoys are allegedly being told that the trip is dangerous.

“The Russians don’t want them to come to Kyiv, and Witkoff is always sensitive to Russian sentiments. There they tell them that it’s dangerous,” the interlocutor told The Kyiv Independent.

Earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that American representatives had confirmed the possibility of the visit. He also emphasized Ukraine’s readiness to hold the meeting and the importance of further active involvement of the United States.

“We are ready to meet them in Ukraine. This is very important. It is important that the United States remain active,” said Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Uncertainty about the arrival of the special envoys arose after a series of Russian drone attacks. Kyiv has been subjected to such strikes for the eighth consecutive day. During a morning attack on September 4, warehouses were damaged, after which a fire broke out. The strike occurred only a few days before the possible visit.

Had the trip taken place, it would have been Witkoff’s and Kushner’s first visit to Ukraine. At the same time, they have previously met repeatedly in Moscow with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Washington is not commenting on the plans of the American special envoys at this time.
