"Easy money" ended in suspicion: a gadget thief was detained in Mykolaiv region

In Pervomaisk, police detained a 25-year-old man suspected of stealing electronics from an acquaintance’s house. According to the police, the suspect took advantage of the owner’s absence, entered the residence and removed a laptop, a mobile phone and a surveillance camera. This was reported on June 1, 2026 by the police of the Mykolaiv Region.

A report of the theft was received by the Pervomaisk District Police Department on the afternoon of May 30. A 40-year-old resident of the district center told law enforcement officers that during his absence a laptop, a mobile phone and a surveillance camera had disappeared from his house.

Investigators and operative officers of the district police department, as well as specialists from the regional police criminal analysis unit, joined the search for the suspect. Law enforcement officers, in particular, used footage from the “Safe City” surveillance system. Thanks to this, the identity of the suspect and his location were established within a few hours. According to the police, the suspect turned out to be a 25-year-old man who had previously been held criminally liable for property crimes.

Investigators found that that day the man took advantage of his acquaintance being away from home. According to the investigation, he damaged the lock on the front door, entered the house, took the equipment and then sold the stolen items. He spent the money received from the sale as he wished.

The suspect was detained in accordance with Article 208 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine. Under the procedural guidance of the Pervomaisk Division of the Mykolaiv Specialized Prosecutor’s Office for Defense of the Southern Region, he was notified of suspicion under Part 4 of Article 185 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine – theft committed under martial law. The article’s penalty provides for up to eight years of imprisonment.

Police seized part of the stolen property. After the necessary investigative actions are completed it is to be returned to the owner. The court is expected to choose a preventive measure for the suspect soon. The pre-trial investigation is ongoing.
