Neighbor heard a child's cries: police major suspected of a sexual crime
Police officer suspected of attempting to rape a child: the case was transferred to the State Bureau of Investigation (DBR)
In Zaporizhzhia, a senior operative of the Main Directorate of the National Police in Zaporizhzhia Oblast, a police major suspected of a completed attempt to rape a 14-year-old female resident of the city was detained. This was reported on 27 May 2026 by the Zaporizhzhia Regional Prosecutor’s Office .
According to the prosecutor’s office, the head of the Zaporizhzhia Regional Prosecutor’s Office on 26 May 2026 notified the police officer of suspicion under Part 2 of Art. 15 and Part 3 of Art. 152 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. According to the investigation, on 26 May 2026 at about 2 a.m. in one of the residential neighborhoods of Zaporizhzhia, the police major committed sexual acts against a minor child without her consent.
Law enforcement officers detained the suspect at the scene in accordance with Art. 208 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine. This happened immediately after a call to the 102 line from a concerned resident of a nearby building. The man heard the victim’s cries and contacted the police. A petition has already been filed with the court to impose a preventive measure on the police officer in the form of pretrial detention without the right to post bail. Primary investigative actions are currently underway. Law enforcement officers are establishing all circumstances of the incident. The pretrial investigation is being carried out by investigators of the Territorial Department of the State Bureau of Investigation (DBR) in Melitopol.
In connection with the dissemination of information about the possible commission of a criminal offense by an employee of the Zaporizhzhia Region police, I inform you that on 26 May 2026 patrol police officers found a police officer and a minor in circumstances from which one can conclude that a serious crime was committed against her.
The police immediately informed police leadership and the DBR about this. The State Bureau of Investigation has initiated a criminal proceeding on this fact. The police officer has already been notified of suspicion. We are providing full assistance to the DBR and the prosecutor’s office in establishing all circumstances of the incident.Regarding the police officer of the Main Directorate of the National Police in Zaporizhzhia Oblast, who has already been suspended from performing his official duties, an internal investigation has been appointed.
I emphasize that no person, regardless of position or affiliation with a law enforcement agency, can be above the law. At this time, I ask you to refrain from spreading unverified information and to wait for the official results of the investigation.
