They want to add Druzhba Park in the Korabelnyi district to the list of nature reserves of the Mykolaiv region
The overall share of protected land in the region currently remains one of the lowest in Ukraine
Despite the war waged by Russia against Ukraine, now in its fifth year, and the fact that part of Mykolaiv region’s nature reserve areas remains occupied, the plans for 2026 include creating three new protected area objects (PZF) in the region, increasing its area by 190 hectares. This involves preparing projects for Friendship Park in the Korabelnyi District of Mykolaiv, as well as two other areas: in Mykolaiv Raion (Novoukrainsky) and another — Starohorozynskyi in Bashtanka Raion.
The expansion of Mykolaiv region’s PZF and the creation of new protected areas were discussed on April 10, 2026 at a press briefing with the participation of the deputy head of the Department of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Mykolaiv Regional Military Administration. Explaining the expected effect of these decisions, Dmytro Mats emphasized the importance of even a small annual increase in protected areas:
“We plan that the area of the nature reserve fund will increase by practically 190 hectares with the creation of these objects. Generally, speaking about Ukraine, the area of protected objects in Mykolaiv oblast is one of the lowest. Only 3.19% of our territory is within objects of the nature reserve fund. If we increase this territory even literally by a hundredth or a tenth per year — that is already significant progress in this matter.”
The return to creating the memorial park “Friendship” became possible after documents confirming its establishment in Mykolaiv were finally found in 2025. Earlier, the head of the Ecology Department of the Mykolaiv OMA, Oleksandra Yefymenko, reported that the territory in the Korabelnyi District had been reserved by a regional council decision as early as 1993, and at that time any construction, reconstruction or felling of green plantations there was prohibited. However, the formal procedure to establish the park was not completed at the time, so since 2021 it had to be started practically from scratch.
The implementation of the current plans should secure the territory’s status and increase the overall share of protected lands in the region, which currently remains one of the lowest in Ukraine.
