The Executive Committee of the Mykolaiv City Council has approved a Comprehensive Scheme for the Placement of Outdoor Advertising on Tsentralnyi Avenue. The decision is intended to reduce visual clutter, bring advertising structures into order, and improve the appearance of Mykolaiv’s main thoroughfare.

The city’s chief architect, Yevhen Poliakov, explained that the document changes both the number of advertising structures and the balance between their formats. A total of 117 structures are planned for the avenue, down from 182—a reduction of 35%, according to the city council’s announcement. The total advertising area will be cut in half.

Large-format advertising will see the biggest reduction, with small and medium-sized structures given priority instead. The new scheme provides for:

  • billboards — 12, down from 89, or nearly seven times fewer; they will account for 10% of all structures;
  • citylights — 75 structures;
  • medium-format structures — 30 structures.

“This regulatory act went through public consultations and discussions. We prepared it together with representatives of the advertising industry, signing numerous memorandums with them on reducing the amount of advertising in the city. We worked together, and this is the result,” said Yevhen Poliakov, chief architect of Mykolaiv.

The city authorities and businesses have agreed that the removal and replacement of advertising structures will begin soon. Similar measures to regulate advertising will later be carried out on:

  • Heroiv Ukrainy Avenue;
  • Myru Avenue;
  • Bohoiavlenskyi Avenue.
