Putin is ready to receive Zelenskyy in Moscow and promises him safety
The Kremlin links the leaders’ meeting to the conclusion of negotiations
Russian President Vladimir Putin said he was ready to receive Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Moscow and guarantee his safety. The statement was relayed by Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov. According to him, the Ukrainian delegation would be provided with the necessary arrangements for the visit.
Ushakov linked the purpose of a meeting between the leaders of Russia and Ukraine at the highest level to the signing of relevant documents after the negotiation process is completed.
The statement about a possible visit by Zelenskyy came after a phone call held on Tuesday, October 27, ahead of peace talks on Ukraine in Abu Dhabi. The call was attended by:
- Russian President Vladimir Putin;
- Finnish President Alexander Stubb;
- Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre.
In Helsinki, officials explained that the purpose of the call was to convey Finland‘s position on the upcoming negotiations to end the war in Ukraine directly to the Russian president.
Meanwhile, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that Stubb and Støre had not put forward any new initiatives to resolve the war during the call. He also conveyed the Russian side’s assessment that there are currently no prerequisites for a systematic approach to this issue by Europe.
Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide said that his country and Finland did not intend to take on the role of mediators in resolving the war. At the same time, both countries support the idea of a trilateral meeting in Abu Dhabi.
