Nearly 200 joint replacements performed in Mykolaiv over nine months
The city budget paid for 38 surgeries under the local program
In the first 9 months of 2026, patients at Mykolaiv city hospitals received 197 joint replacements. Of these, 159 were provided under the Medical Guarantees Program (MGP), which covers joint replacement at no cost for patients who follow the prescribed care pathway.
Under the MGP, hospitals provided:
- 109 hip replacements;
- 50 knee replacements.
Separately, the city budget funded 38 surgeries. The local program has been running in Mykolaiv for six years.
Joint replacement surgeries are currently performed at three city medical facilities:
- City Hospital No. 3;
- City Hospital No. 5;
- Branch No. 3 of City Hospital No. 1.
An orthopedic trauma surgeon selects the type of joint implant, taking into account the condition of the joint, the specifics of the illness or injury, any previous surgeries, and other medical factors. Before the procedure, patients have the right to find out who manufactured the implant, which model is being offered, and why it was chosen.
There is an electronic waiting list for planned joint replacement. Patients may choose a hospital from the list designated by the Ministry of Health, regardless of where they live. Veterans are entitled to priority surgery. In emergencies, surgery is performed without waiting in line.
For treatment provided at no cost under the MGP, patients should not be charged separately for any of the following:
- the joint implant itself;
- the surgery;
- anesthesia;
- the hospital stay.
Current regulations also do not require patients to buy an implant from an outside seller in order to have it implanted as part of treatment provided at no cost.
Only additional services not covered by the Medical Guarantees Program may be charged for—for example, a more comfortable hospital room. The medical facility must formally approve and publish the fees for such services.
The Mykolaiv City Council shared information about joint replacement outcomes and modern treatment options for musculoskeletal conditions and injuries during Bone and Joint Health Week.
