The fleet will be replenished after Russian attacks: Ukrzaliznytsia will receive $100 million for used locomotives
Slovakia will transfer three electric locomotives, and the EBRD is preparing €130 million
Ukraine has agreed to secure grant funding of $100 million to purchase used locomotives abroad. They are planned to replenish the fleet of Ukrzaliznytsia, which suffered significant losses due to Russian attacks.
Agreements were reached during the “Carpathian Eight” summit, the Ministry of Reconstruction, Infrastructure and Transport of Ukraine reported. Financing is to be provided through the URTF trust fund as part of the RELINC project, implemented jointly with the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development.
Since the start of the full-scale invasion, 533 Ukrzaliznytsia locomotives have been damaged. Private industrial companies also suffered losses — another 75 of their locomotives were damaged. As a result, the railways need to both repair rolling stock and increase the locomotive fleet.
Separate assistance will be provided by Slovakia, which agreed to transfer 3 electric locomotives to Ukraine.
At the summit they also reached a principled agreement with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development on allocating €130 million. The funds are to be used for critical needs and to strengthen the energy resilience of Ukrzaliznytsia. The relevant agreements are planned to be signed by the end of September.
The ministry stressed that international support should ensure not only the restoration of damaged rolling stock. It is also planned to be used for the modernization and increased resilience of the Ukrainian railway.
