At 18, she sued her mother: in Mykolaiv alimony for education was ordered
Until she finishes university: the mother was ordered to give her daughter part of her earnings
In Mykolaiv an 18-year-old student obtained by court the recovery of alimony from her mother for the period of study. The Central District Court of the city ordered the woman to pay the daughter 1/6 of all types of earnings monthly. This was reported on 17 September 2026 by the press service of the Central District Court of Mykolaiv.
As the plaintiff noted, her parents stopped living together when the girl was only six months old. Since then she has lived with her father, who has raised and provided for her. According to the girl, her mother during that time did not provide her with financial assistance and did not take an interest in her upbringing. In September 2025 the girl enrolled in university in a medical program. Her education was paid for by her father.
Later the student was diagnosed with an illness that required surgery. The father also covered the treatment expenses, while the mother, according to the plaintiff, did not provide financial assistance. Due to the treatment costs the family’s financial situation worsened and paying for education became more difficult. At the same time, the full-time form of study and her health, the student said, do not allow her to be employed. Since it was impossible to reach an agreement with the mother about financial support, the girl turned to the court.
Having examined the case materials, the court ruled to recover from the mother in favor of the daughter:
- 1/6 of all types of earnings each month;
- payments will be made until the student completes her studies;
- at the same time alimony will be paid no longer than until she reaches 23 years of age.
The court also permitted immediate enforcement of the decision within the amount of one month’s alimony.
Such an obligation of parents is provided for by Art.199 of the Family Code of Ukraine: if an adult daughter or son continues their studies and therefore needs financial assistance, parents are obliged to support them until the age of 23, provided they are able to provide such assistance. The adult student also has the right to apply to the court with a corresponding claim.
