On the night of September 17, a Russian drone attacked a civilian merchant vessel flying the flag of Tanzania that was heading to one of Ukraine’s ports. The ship’s captain was killed and three crew members were wounded, the Administration of Sea Ports of Ukraine said.

The press service of the AMPU expressed support to the family of the deceased and to the wounded sailors:

“We extend our condolences to the family and relatives of the deceased. We wish the injured a speedy recovery.”

Information about the condition of the attacked vessel is currently being clarified. The AMPU emphasized that Russia continues to carry out deliberate strikes on Ukrainian ports, port infrastructure and civilian merchant vessels. Such attacks create a danger for international shipping in the Black Sea.

The agency also appealed to the international community:

“We expect an appropriate response from the international community and coordinated actions to strengthen the protection of civilian shipping.”

The head of the Odesa Regional State Administration, Oleh Kiper, confirmed the captain’s death and the wounding of three seafarers. He noted that such strikes grossly violate the norms of international humanitarian law and endanger people’s lives.

The source also separately mentioned an attack by Russia on the port infrastructure of the Odesa region, as a result of which a vessel was damaged and four people were wounded.
