Depleted salt supplies: Mykolaiv seeks materials for winter roads
Sand has been stockpiled at 70–80%, screenings — fully
The municipal enterprise «ELU Avtodorih» has begun preparing Mykolaiv‘s roads for the autumn-winter period. The enterprise is building up a stock of anti-icing materials; however, after the prolonged frosts last winter, strategic reserves of technical salt were completely exhausted.
The enterprise’s director, Vitaliy Shevchenko, said on the air of the «MART» TV channel that the bulk of the allocated funds are planned to be spent on purchasing technical salt. Its procurement has been complicated by the halt of domestic production at the volumes cities need and by the blocking of seaports.
“Technical salt in Ukraine is no longer produced in the quantity required to maintain cities, and the ports are idle. We have already carried out about six procurements, and only now, with cautious optimism, are we looking at the possibility that suppliers will be able to deliver salt to us in some way,” explained Vitaliy Shevchenko.
Due to complex logistics, the enterprise has prepared a backup option for winter road maintenance. If problems arise with salt supplies, roads will be treated with sand and screenings — fine gravel.
Currently Mykolaiv is supplied with sand at 70–80%, and the stock of screenings has been formed at 100%.
