Ukraine–Russia negotiations have stalled: the ambassador named the side blocking the agreements
Kyiv, Ankara, and Washington are ready to continue the dialogue
Talks on ending the war between Ukraine and Russia are effectively on pause due to Moscow’s position. Ukraine’s ambassador to Turkey, Nariman Dzhelyal, said that Kyiv, Ankara and Washington are ready to continue the dialogue, but the Russian side has so far not shown readiness to reach agreements.
The diplomat said this in an interview with RBC-Ukraine. According to Dzhelyal, Turkey views the de facto halt of the political negotiation process with concern. Turkish diplomats understand the reasons for the pause and attribute it specifically to the actions of the Russian side.
The freezing or pause in the negotiations arose due to Russia’s actions
At the same time, the diplomatic stalemate has not stopped prisoner exchanges. Dzhelyal noted that the release of Ukrainian prisoners of war and some civilians had taken place before, but recently the number of released Ukrainians has increased significantly.
Turkey urges a return to negotiations
Ankara continues to urge Ukraine and Russia to resume meetings and diplomatic dialogue. This issue has become particularly important against the backdrop of the escalation in the Black Sea, where the security of commercial shipping is of fundamental importance to Turkey.
According to the ambassador, the deaths of Turkish sailors as a result of attacks on commercial vessels cause serious concern in Ankara. Turkey is also forced to respond to Russian strikes on Ukrainian port infrastructure and civilian ships.
Further escalation does not serve Turkey’s interests, so the country continues to insist on the need for direct meetings between the parties and the continuation of diplomatic contacts.
Zelensky is ready to meet Putin in Turkey
Nariman Dzhelyal emphasized that Ukraine is not abandoning negotiations. President Volodymyr Zelensky, he said, has repeatedly stated his willingness to meet personally with the Russian leader Vladimir Putin.
In particular, the possibility of holding such a meeting on Turkish territory was discussed. Zelensky spoke about this option during contacts with the President of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
At the same time, the ambassador believes that talks at the level of representatives who are not heads of state are not yet producing sufficient results. He named the Russian side’s unwillingness to reach agreements as the main problem.
The Turks are ready, we are ready, the Americans are ready. Everyone is ready except for the Kremlin’s leader himself and his inner circle
