Ballistics, cruise missiles and "Shaheds": the consequences of the massive attack on Ukraine
Russia struck Ukraine with missiles and drones: dozens killed and injured
On the night of August 20, 2026, Russia carried out a massive combined strike on Ukraine. The enemy used ballistic missiles of various types, cruise missiles and strike drones. According to the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Russian forces combined different means of attack to inflict as much damage as possible on civilian infrastructure.
The consequences of the attack were recorded in several regions:
- Kyiv: died 12 people, more than 30 were wounded. Residential buildings were damaged, including an apartment building whose upper floors were destroyed. A children’s hospital and a school were also affected. Emergency rescue operations continue.
- Kyiv region: one person was killed, seven others were injured. According to the Kyiv OVA, in the Boryspil district six people were injured, in Brovary — one person was killed and another was injured. Damaged were 14 private houses, four warehouses, a gas station, an apartment building and eight cars.
- Odesa region: Russian drones attacked a checkpoint on the border with Moldova.
- Chernihiv region: a gas infrastructure facility was hit.
According to Zelenskyy, as a result of the massive attack on Kyiv and the Kyiv region at least 13 people were killed, about 40 were injured.
The president emphasized that Ukraine needs more missile defense assets. Work on the FREYJA program continues, however interceptor missiles for the Patriot systems cannot yet be replaced by other means.
