16 August left very different traces in the history of Mykolaiv: this date is marked in official references as the beginning of the Nazi occupation of the city, decades later dangerous invasive crabs were reported in the Dnipro-Buh estuary, and during the recent war the fate of a school destroyed by Russian missiles was decided in the Korabelnyi district. In 2025 the same date brought the district a more peaceful piece of news – the schedules of new trolleybus routes.
16 August 1941: the date marking the start of the occupation of Mykolaiv has an important clarification
The Encyclopedia of the History of Ukraine dates the Nazi occupation of Mykolaiv from 16 August 1941 to 28 March 1944. At the same time, the research of historian Yurii Kotliar clarifies: on 16 August the last Soviet units left the city, and German motorcyclists broke into the city through Vodopii on the morning of 17 August. The events of the occupation through the eyes of a resident of today’s Korabelnyi district were also “Korabeliv.Info” previously recounted.
16 August 2019: Chinese crabs found in the Dnipro-Buh estuary
“Korabeliv.Info” reported that several Chinese mitten crabs were caught in the Dnipro-Buh estuary in the Mykolaiv region. This species – Eriocheir sinensis – has been included by the International Union for Conservation of Nature in the list of the 100 worst invasive alien species in the world.
16 August 2022: the scale of destruction of School No.48 was shown in Korabelnyi
The city mayor Oleksandr Senkevych reported on an inspection of School No.48 in the Korabelnyi district, on the grounds of which 3 missiles detonated during a Russian strike. Part of the building was destroyed down to the foundations, furniture and equipment were removed from the intact rooms, an emergency wall had to be dismantled, and the school was to be mothballed for the duration of the war. The missile strike itself occurred on 24 July 2022.
16 August 2025: schedules of new trolleybuses published for Korabelnyi
The municipal enterprise “Mykolaivelectrotrans” published the schedules for new trolleybus routes No.11 and No.12 in the Korabelnyi district, which were to begin operating in test mode from 18 August 2025. At the same time the timetable for route No.10 also changed.

16 August 1960 the Republic of Cyprus became an independent state. And on 16 August 2008 Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt at the Beijing Olympics ran the 100-metre final in 9.69 seconds, setting the then world record.
For Mykolaiv this 16 August combined several very different chapters of history at once – occupation, an ecological threat, the consequences of the recent war, and the gradual return of normal urban life in the Korabelnyi district.
