14 August in the history of Mykolaiv combined culture, war and modern urban life. On this day one of the city’s most famous libraries was founded, in 1941 Mykolaiv was on the brink of Nazi occupation, and in 2022 Russian forces again struck residential neighborhoods.

14 August 1900: a library was founded in Mykolaiv that today bears the name of Kropyvnytskyi

On this day the current Central City Library named after M.L. Kropyvnytskyi was founded — initially as a branch of the Mykolaiv Public Library. The Mykolaiv City Council’s Department of Culture noted that the founding date is 1 August 1900 Old Style, i.e. 14 August by the modern calendar.

14 August 1941: Mykolaiv was being prepared for abandonment, shipbuilding plants were destroyed

A critical situation was developing on the approaches to Mykolaiv. Mykolaiv historian Yurii Kotliar recounted that on 14 August 1941 Soviet troops were leaving the city to avoid being encircled. In those days, during the evacuation, equipment was disabled and parts of the capacities of Mykolaiv’s shipbuilding plants were blown up; the city’s occupation finally began a few days later.

14 August 2022: Russians struck Mykolaiv with “Smerch” and S-300

On the night of 14 August 2022 Russian forces again shelled Mykolaiv. As reported “Korabelov.Info”, a residential area was hit by the MLRS “Smerch”, and in another attack S-300 system missiles were used. There was information about one wounded civilian, and damage to civilian infrastructure and communications.

14 August 2024: more than 18 thousand ragweed plants were collected in Mykolaiv in one day

In Mykolaiv, during a city campaign against ragweed, they collected 18,203 plants on the first day. Volunteers and municipal workers were involved in the fight against the dangerous allergen, and the collected plants were handed over for disposal.

14 August 1941 US President Franklin Roosevelt and British Prime Minister Winston Churchill published the Atlantic Charter — a declaration of principles for the postwar world order that later influenced the formation of the United Nations. The Roosevelt Presidential Library archive confirms that the document was announced on that day.

For Mykolaiv, 14 August is a date with very different pages: from the founding of the city library to the wartime destruction of the shipbuilding center in 1941 and Russian strikes already in the 21st century.
