1.62‰ and fleeing the scene after the collision: in Korabelnyi District, a drunk driver struck a 17-year-old moped rider
Law enforcement officers are looking for witnesses to the traffic accident
In the evening of July 13, 2026 in the Korabelnyi district of Mykolaiv, a road traffic accident occurred in which a 17-year-old moped rider was injured. Police detained the 25-year-old driver of a Volkswagen Passat who, according to the investigation, was under the influence of alcohol and fled the scene after the collision.
The crash occurred at approximately 10:20 p.m. near the intersection of Bohoyavlenskyi Avenue and Metalurhiv Street, reports the communications department of the Mykolaiv Region Police.
According to preliminary police data, the 17-year-old rider of a Honda Dio moped stopped at a traffic light that showed a prohibited signal. At that moment the 25-year-old driver of the Volkswagen Passat struck the moped.
After the collision the car driver did not remain at the scene but drove away. The underage moped rider sustained injuries. Medics transported the young man to a medical facility.
Law enforcement officers quickly began searching for the vehicle and soon found the Volkswagen Passat with the driver not far from the scene of the accident.
During their interaction with the driver, police noticed obvious signs of alcohol intoxication. The man was taken to a medical facility for an examination.
As a result of the examination, 1.62 per mille of alcohol was found in the driver’s system.
Investigators from the department for investigating transport-related crimes of the investigative directorate of the Mykolaiv Region Police detained the Volkswagen Passat driver in accordance with Article 208 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine.
A criminal proceeding was opened under part 1 of Article 286-1 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine — violation of road safety rules or operation of transport by a person who is driving while intoxicated.
The article’s penalty provides for up to three years imprisonment with deprivation of the right to drive vehicles for up to five years.
Currently, law enforcement is deciding whether to notify the detainee of suspicion. Police continue to establish all circumstances and the full mechanism of the collision.

The detainee’s guilt will be determined by a court.
