Instead of bail — SIZO: suspect in fatal crash on Bohoyavlenskyi taken into custody
A 53-year-old driver was drunk, ran a red light, and struck a 36-year-old man
The Mykolaiv Court of Appeal granted the appeal filed by the prosecutor of the District Prosecutor’s Office of the city of Mykolaiv and changed the preventive measure for the 53-year-old resident of Mykolaiv, who is suspected of a fatal traffic accident.
This was reported on June 13, 2026 by the prosecutor’s office.
The Court of Appeal overturned the decision of the court of first instance and imposed pre-trial detention on the suspect without setting bail.
The man is suspected of violating traffic safety rules while intoxicated, which caused the victim’s death. He is charged under Part 3 of Art. 286-1 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.
According to the investigation, the accident occurred on May 23, 2026 on Bohoyavlenskyi Avenue in Mykolaiv.
Investigators believe the suspect was behind the wheel while intoxicated and ran a red light at the intersection.
At that moment a 36-year-old man was crossing the roadway at a pedestrian crossing on a green light.
As a result of the collision, the victim suffered serious injuries and later died in hospital.
Earlier, the Inhulskyi District Court of Mykolaiv denied the prosecution’s request to remand the suspect in custody and instead imposed bail as the preventive measure.
The prosecutor disagreed with that decision and filed an appeal.
June 11, 2026 the Court of Appeal upheld the prosecutor’s arguments and ordered pre-trial detention of the suspect without the right to post bail.
The sanction of the charged article provides for up to 10 years imprisonment with deprivation of the right to drive vehicles for up to 10 years.
