In Mykolaiv already in May 2026 they may start supplying drinking water to the city’s water supply network. Currently, technical water continues to run from residents’ taps, but the water supply system is undergoing the final stages of preparation.

This was told in an exclusive comment to  Novyny.LIVE  by the mayor Oleksandr Senkevych.

According to the mayor, the launch depends on the completion of the construction of the treatment facilities, their commissioning and transfer to the balance of MKP “Mykolaivvodokanal”. At the same time, the city is finishing the filtration station, checking systems and preparing the networks for stable operation.

Oleksandr Senkevych explained that the city receives information about the timelines from the relevant ministry. According to him, there are now signs that a launch in May really can take place, since the construction of the treatment facilities is entering the final stage.

“You know, I receive information the same way you do, as does Vitaliy Kim – from the Ministry. But we received information that in May these treatment facilities will finally be launched and transferred to the balance of “Mykolaivvodokanal”. We see that this seems to be true – the construction of these facilities is being finalized. And, actually, we are all waiting together, because we have the same water. We do not have a separate pipeline from the Dnipro of treated water”, – he said.

The mayor also explained why the process of returning drinking water to taps has been delayed. Before the full-scale war Mykolaiv used water from the Dnipro, but after the pipeline was destroyed the city switched to water from the Southern Bug. It has different characteristics, so a new system was needed to properly treat it. According to Senkevych, in a short time they managed to build a new pipeline and nearly complete the filtration station.

“These are indeed technical problems. For such a short time, it’s amazing that they built a new pipeline and are now finishing the filtration station”, – Senkevych explained.

At the same time, in Mykolaiv the renewal of the water supply networks continues. The mayor noted that pipe replacement is being carried out with the support of the government of Denmark and the NEFCO fund, but this process will not be fast – repair work may continue for years. In addition, the Mykolaiv City Council is negotiating with the European Investment Bank regarding the construction of additional filtration stations. The idea is that they should allow treating water of different qualities, even saline, to drinking standards.

“We are working with the European Investment Bank – to build additional filtration stations so that any water, even saline, can be processed into drinking water. This is a large and long project. I hope the Ministry of Finance approves it for us, and we will start working on it soon”, – the mayor explained.

When asked whether that means that already in May Mykolaiv residents will be able to drink tap water, Oleksandr Senkevych answered cautiously: the city expects the launch after the completion of the construction of the treatment facilities. At the same time, the mayor noted that even after the launch the water will probably still be recommended to be boiled.

“It’s probably advisable to boil it, but in any case it will be drinkable”, – he concluded.

For Mykolaiv, which after the Russian strikes lived for years with technical water in the taps, the launch of the treatment facilities may become one of the most important stages in restoring basic city infrastructure. At the same time, even after this the city will still have to deal for a long time with old networks that require large-scale replacement.
