The memorial project for those killed in Korabelnyi is completed: Mykolaiv is seeking funds for construction
The second complex for the Inhulskyi District is currently undergoing expert review
In Mykolaiv, the design of a memorial complex honoring fallen servicemen in the Korabelnyi district has been completed, and funding is now being sought to start construction; this was reported during a live broadcast on 22 April by the head of the City Council’s Capital Construction Department, Oleksii Savchuk, who noted that the second project for the Inhulskyi district is undergoing expert review.
The official clarified that memorial complexes in different parts of the city are being implemented based on the results of the Department of Architecture’s architectural competition, and outlined the current stage of both projects.
According to the results of the architectural competition held by the Department of Architecture, we are implementing memorial complexes in the Inhulskyi and Korabelnyi districts. This is a remembrance of our defenders. In the Korabelnyi district the design has already been completed. We are now seeking funding for its implementation. In the Inhulskyi district the project is undergoing expert review, after which it should be approved,
The city has been working on the idea of creating separate places of remembrance for a long time: as early as January 2023 the mayor of Mykolaiv, Oleksandr Senkevych, reported on preparing a plan to form a memorial sector for residents who died as a result of the full-scale war.
Later they announced the arrangement in 2024 of an Alley of Remembrance for fallen defenders, and later the city hall selected a specific location: along Kherson Highway, opposite the Mykolaiv Zoo.
At the same time, the city plans to create special sectors for honorary burials of fallen servicemen at several cemeteries:
- Matviivka neighborhood cemetery, Verkhna Street, 161;
- cemetery in the Korabelnyi district, Zhukov Street;
- Balabanivske cemetery in the Korabelnyi district.
The preliminary cost of constructing a military cemetery in the Korabelnyi district of Mykolaiv was estimated at 47 million hryvnias.
Separately, at the city cemetery in Balovne in Mykolaiv, they plan to create an «Alley of Glory» for the burial of servicemen who gave their lives for the independence and sovereignty of the state.
In 2024 the Department of Architecture of Mykolaiv approved the assignment for designing the memorial complex in honor of the servicemen, and in January 2025 the Capital Construction Department, without an auction, concluded a contract for 1.4 million hryvnias for the engineering design of the construction of this complex, which will be located on the territory of the Central City Cemetery along Kherson Highway in Mykolaiv.
