"It bothers me" as a death sentence for a tree: a green catastrophe caused by the residents of Korabelnyi
Not maintenance but mutilation: Mykolaiv residents are outraged by the way trees are being pruned in the city
In Mykolaiv, in particular in the Korabelnyi District, the debate over pruning and cutting down trees has flared up again. The trigger was a post from March 23 2026 on the Korabeliv.Info Telegram channel, where readers expressed outrage that the city’s greenery is steadily decreasing, and the process is often justified by everyday inconveniences such as window shading.
In an appeal submitted to the editorial office under a rubric, the author emotionally notes that the city is being turned into a desert by its own hands. She reminds readers that once Mykolaiv was considered one of the greenest cities in Ukraine, while it takes years to grow a tree and only minutes to destroy it. In her view, the campaign to reduce green plantings is only gaining momentum, and now residents themselves are joining in. A separately resonant point was a published screenshot of a conversation in which one participant is outraged that the city is again “cutting down living trees”, while another interlocutor replies that the trees are not being destroyed but “rejuvenated”, explaining this by the desire not to use electric lighting in the apartment during the day, especially when the leaves are coming out.
Other reactions from residents also appeared under the post. Some directly criticize the pruning approach, stating that such mutilation of plantings is hard to call professional work:
“Once our city was shipbuilding, and not just one of the greenest. And now dogs and trees – that’s what we discuss”, – expressed reader Igorevna T.
Criticism addressed to the municipal workers, who spoke sharply about the pruning of green plantings:
“The way “Mykolaiv Parks” cuts is a disgrace. To mutilate trees like that you either have to know how, or you don’t know how to prune”, – commented reader Serhii.
Stories about the “rejuvenation” of trees in the city repeatedly raise the same question: where is the boundary between necessary care and the actual destruction of green plantings. For some it is about light in the windows, for others – about the loss of shade, oxygen and the familiar appearance of the streets. Against the backdrop of war, heat and the constant lack of normal urban comfort, the issue of trees has long ceased to be secondary for many Mykolaiv residents.
