Sewage polluted the Bug Estuary in Mykolaiv
The responsible official of Mykolaivvodokanal was held administratively liable
In the Zavodskyi District of Mykolaiv, sewage entered the Bug Estuary. Inspectors found signs of pollution near the “Zolnyi” garage cooperative and the “Apelsyn” residential complex.
Laboratory tests confirmed that the water contained pollutant concentrations above permissible limits. The following indicators exceeded the norms:
- ammonium nitrogen;
- nitrites;
- nitrates;
- phosphates;
- sulfates;
- total iron.
In response to the emergency near the “Strasse” market, the State Environmental Inspectorate of the South-Western District summoned a representative of the municipal utility “Mykolaivvodokanal” to draw up administrative reports. The company’s responsible official was held administratively liable under Part 1 of Article 59 of the Code of Ukraine on Administrative Offenses.
The inspectorate will calculate the damage caused to the state after receiving data on the total volume of wastewater that entered the estuary. “Mykolaivvodokanal” must provide this information once the emergency has been resolved. The data will be used to calculate the damage caused by violating legal requirements for the protection and sustainable use of water resources.
The inspectorate also issued recommendations to “Mykolaivvodokanal” and the municipal utility “Road Maintenance and Operations Department”: bring the storm-drain channels into proper technical condition and clear them of sewage.
Untreated wastewater degrades the quality of water bodies and places additional strain on aquatic ecosystems. The Environmental Inspectorate continues to monitor the situation and take measures to prevent further pollution of the Bug Estuary.
