Mykolaiv Oblast is preparing for the heating season and strengthening communities’ energy resilience in case of power outages. More than 2,000 apartment buildings and over 1,000 boiler houses have been prepared across the region, and a reserve of thousands of generators has been established. At the same time, some work on heating networks and the connection of new equipment is still underway.

This was reported by Heorhii Reshetilov, acting head of the Mykolaiv Regional Military Administration, during a broadcast on Suspilne. According to him, 2,107 apartment buildings supplied with heat from centralized sources and 1,091 boiler houses, including those serving social institutions, have been prepared for the heating season. Hydraulic testing has also been carried out on 350.8 km of heating networks. Work is still ongoing on some sections.

A fleet of 3,639 generators has been established across the region to provide backup power to municipal enterprises and social institutions. They are used at heat and water supply facilities, wastewater systems, and social institutions. According to Reshetilov, the region’s critical infrastructure is 100% equipped with generators, and fuel reserves for them are now being increased.

Another area of preparation is cogeneration units, which produce electricity and heat at the same time. 18 such units with a total capacity of 20.55 MW have already been commissioned in the region. Six more units with a combined capacity of 11.6 MW are planned by the end of the year.

In addition, 18 modular boiler houses with a total capacity of 224.12 MW have been purchased and installed. They are currently being connected to utility networks. Once operational, this equipment is expected to strengthen backup capacity for communities’ heating and social infrastructure.

Special attention is being paid to the stability of mobile communications during potential blackouts. Regional authorities also stress the need to protect critical infrastructure and ensure the uninterrupted operation of facilities essential to people’s daily lives.

Despite the reported readiness figures, preparations for winter are not yet complete: work is still underway on some sections of the heating networks, and some of the installed boiler houses are still being connected. How reliably the backup systems perform during prolonged power outages will also depend on equipment readiness, fuel availability, and the timely completion of the work.
