"Mykolaiv region is well protected for the upcoming heating season," Kim on diversification
More than 90 boiler houses have already been built in the region
Mykolaiv Oblast diversified its heating systems and, according to the head of the Mykolaiv RMA Vitaliy Kim, has a sufficiently high level of protection ahead of the next heating season. He said this in an exclusive interview with the agency “Interfax-Ukraine“.
the majority of the region’s residents do not use gas as their main source of heat. He noted that 58% of Mykolaiv region is not heated by gas, and centralized heating actually exists only in Mykolaiv and Pivdennoukrainsk.
Separately, the head of the region explained that in Pivdennoukrainsk the situation is less risky due to the presence of a nuclear power plant and a relatively small population – about 40 thousand people.
Meanwhile, in Mykolaiv the key problem used to be dependence on the CHP. According to Kim, its operation has been duplicated by an extensive network of block-modular boiler houses.
He reported that in total more than 90 boiler houses have already been built in the region, and last year the state financed another 18 additional large boiler houses.
Vitaliy Kim admitted that such a restructuring of the heat supply system was not a display of the authorities’ foresight, but a forced decision after Russian strikes on critical infrastructure.
“It’s not that we are very smart – we were forced to diversify all systems. When the CHP was hit, and 100,000 people were without heating for two days, everyone immediately understood that something had to be done and it was done over the past year. Therefore, I am more or less calm about the heating season because we started two years earlier. Accordingly, we will be more protected, let’s say, next season,” he added.
According to the head of the RMA, the region has 3400 generators with capacities from 1 to 1.5 MW, including in reserve. This should help the region in the event of new attacks on energy infrastructure.
Vitaliy Kim also reported that the company DTEK has already built wind farms in the region with a total capacity of 189 MW during the full-scale war. According to him, the company is completing additional projects and plans to raise the total capacity to 500 MW.
The head of the region emphasized that Mykolaiv region overall produces significantly more electricity than it consumes itself.
“Overall we generate 4 GW of capacity, three of which is the nuclear plant, plus solar and wind energy. And we use about 300 MW, so we give Ukraine ten times more than we use,” Kim said.
