Nearly 1,600 new sanctions targeting Russia’s military-industrial complex were adopted on October 12 by the foreign ministers of European Union member states. According to x.com.

The planned additions to the sanctions list comprise 1,646 entries. They are set to include:

  • 743 individuals;
  • 826 organizations;
  • 77 people who ran in September in elections to the Russian State Duma in temporarily occupied parts of Ukraine.

The restrictions include a ban on entering the European Union, asset freezes, and a ban on providing funding. Once the new package is approved, the total number of people on the EU sanctions list will reach nearly 4,650.

Kaja Kallas, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, announced the decision and called it the largest single expansion of the European Union’s sanctions list since the start of Russia’s war against Ukraine.

“We are making it much harder, slower, and more expensive for Russia to produce the weapons it uses to kill Ukrainians,” Kaja Kallas wrote.

Separately, the United Kingdom imposed 31 new sanctions against Russia. British restrictions target:

  • Russian shadow fleet vessels;
  • people involved in torturing Ukrainians and deporting children;
  • members of pro-Kremlin disinformation networks.
