Underground schools have accommodated 2,000 children in the Kherson region

About 2 thousand children from relatively safer settlements of Kherson Oblast have begun attending underground schools. Currently, seven such institutions operate in the region, and another two schools are scheduled to open soon.

The organization of schooling was described by the deputy head of the Kherson Regional Military Administration, Oleksandr Tolokonnikov, on the “Novyny.Live” broadcast. According to him, few children remain in the region, and underground schools are available where the security situation has allowed them to be built.

In Kherson itself, in-person schooling has not been resumed due to the ongoing danger. Oleksandr Tolokonnikov explained that the threat to children exists not only at schools but also simply on the way to them:

Of course, there are still children in Kherson. But in Kherson we, unfortunately, cannot allow children to go to any school, because even on the way, on the street, they can be attacked by drones.

A mandatory evacuation of children from all districts of Kherson has not yet been announced, but the official does not rule out such a decision. He also spoke about the gradual evacuation of children from the coastal zone and dangerous settlements:

This process is moving bit by bit. We are currently evacuating from the coastal zone — we have taken out almost all the children — from dangerous settlements. Evacuation from all districts of Kherson has not yet been announced. But I think that is also possible.

Already in 2024, the Ministry of Education reported on the construction of underground schools in Kherson Oblast. One such protected facility was planned to be built directly in Kherson.

Almost all industrial enterprises in Kherson Oblast have still not returned to work. As of 2026, only about 5% of the region’s enterprises had resumed production.
