Air defenses shot down seven ballistic missiles during Russia's massive attack
On the night of August 27 2026, Russian forces carried out a massive aerial strike on Ukraine. The attack began around 18:00 August 26 and continued into the morning of the following day. For the strike the enemy used two anti-ship “Oniks” missiles, ballistic missiles “Iskander-M”/KN-23 and 258 drones of various types. This was reported by the Ukrainian Air Force.
Anti-ship “Oniks” missiles were launched by Russian forces from the territory of temporarily occupied Crimea. Ballistic missiles flew from the Bryansk and Kursk regions of the Russian Federation. The attack also used strike drones Shahed, “Herbera”, S8000 “Banderol” and decoy drones of the “Parodiya” type. Approximately a third of the strike UAVs were jet-powered.
Drones were launched from the areas:
- Kursk;
- Millerovo;
- Orel;
- Primorsko-Akhtarsk;
- temporarily occupied Donetsk;
- Hvardiyske in temporarily occupied Crimea.
The main directions of the strike were Odesa, Kyiv, Dnipropetrovsk and Poltava regions, as well as Zaporizhzhia.
The aerial attack was repelled by aviation, anti-aircraft missile units, electronic warfare assets, unmanned systems units and mobile fire groups of the Defense Forces of Ukraine. According to preliminary data, as of 09:00 233 aerial targets had been shot down or suppressed:
- one anti-ship “Oniks” missile;
- seven ballistic “Iskander-M”/KN-23 missiles;
- three S8000 “Banderol” drones;
- 222 Shahed, “Herbera” and other types of drones.
In total, the Defense Forces neutralized 225 of the 258 drones involved in the attack. Impacts of Russian aerial attack means were recorded at 15 locations. At another 11 locations, shot-down targets and their fragments fell. Some missiles and drones did not reach the targets designated by the enemy.
In the Romny community of Sumy region, as a result of a Russian strike on civilian infrastructure, a 66-year-old woman was killed. Another four people sought medical assistance, reported the head of the Sumy Regional Military Administration Oleh Hryhorov.
In Zaporizhzhia three people were injured — two men and a woman. A car and buildings were damaged, a fire broke out, reported the head of the Zaporizhzhia Regional Military Administration Ivan Fedorov.
In Kryvyi Rih Russian forces attacked an industrial enterprise with two ballistic missiles. Three people were wounded; all were hospitalized in moderate condition, the Dnipropetrovsk Regional Military Administration said.
In Kharkiv a drone hit the balcony of an apartment on the fourth floor of a multi-story building in the Industrial district. A 30-year-old man suffered an acute stress reaction and received medical assistance, reported the head of the Kharkiv Regional Military Administration Oleh Syniehubov.
In Odesa an infrastructure facility, an educational institution and an apartment building were damaged. There was no information about casualties at the time of reporting, the Odesa City Military Administration said.
In Kyiv fragments fell in the yard of a residential building in the Podilskyi district and on the territory of an educational institution in Shevchenkivskyi district. Consequences are being clarified, the Kyiv City Military Administration said.
At the time of the morning report the aerial attack was still ongoing — several Russian drones remained in the sky. Residents of Ukraine were urged not to ignore air raid alerts and to stay in shelters.
