25 August left very different events in the history of Mykolaiv: the launching of the city’s first ship, the birth of a famous artist, a football drama in the Korabelnyi district, a minibus that passengers had to push, a road accident at a grain terminal, and a Russian missile strike.

25 August 1790 Old Style: the first ship was launched in Mykolaiv

At the Mykolaiv Admiralty shipyard the first ship built in Mykolaiv was launched – a 44-gun sailing frigate “Saint Nicholas”. The date belongs to a period when the Russian Empire used the Julian calendar, so 25 August 1790 Old Style corresponds to 5 September 1790 in the modern Gregorian calendar.

25 August 1960: Oleg Mykhailovych Tistol was born in the Mykolaiv region

In Vradiivka was born Ukrainian artist Oleg Mykhailovych Tistol, one of the leaders of the “New Ukrainian Wave”. In 1970 his family moved to Mykolaiv, in 1972 he began studying at the local children’s art school, and in 1978-1979 he worked as a lettering artist at the Mykolaiv Art Fund.

25 August 2012: a football drama in Korabelnyi ended with a score of 5:5

At the stadium of school No. 33 in the Korabelnyi district the teams “Zenit – Oktyabrskoye” and “C&O UNITED” met in the Street Football Cup. After the first half it was 3:1, then “C&O UNITED” went ahead 5:3, but in the last 2 minutes the opponents scored 2 goals5:5. This draw allowed the “Youth Council” together with “Zenit – Oktyabrskoye” to represent the Korabelnyi district in the city games.

25 August 2017: passengers pushed a minibus heading to Korabelnyi

Around 13:40 in Mykolaiv minibus No. 52, which was running the route Velyka Morska – the “Okean” factory, stalled at the “Molodohvardiiska” stop. The driver asked men for help, passengers got out and began pushing the vehicle. They managed to start the minibus not on the first try.

25 August 2021: trucks collided at a grain terminal in Korabelnyi

In the morning on the premises of the enterprise “Yevrovneshtorg” at Aivazovskogo Street, 14, in the Korabelnyi district MAN and Ford grain trucks collided: the MAN driver was reversing and the semi-trailer hit a parked Ford. No one was injured; both trucks sustained mechanical damage.

25 August 2022: Russian forces struck the residential sector of Mykolaiv with missiles

Around 03:30 Russian forces shelled Mykolaiv. According to preliminary information from the Regional Military Administration, the strike was carried out with S-300-type missiles: one of them hit a private residential area, setting a house on fire, and several other homes were damaged. At that time there was no information about deaths or injuries.

25 August 2023: a teenager disappeared at the “Chayka” beach

At 18:00 rescuers were informed about the disappearance of a teenager in the waters of the Bug estuary near the “Chayka” beach in the Korabelnyi district. That evening the search yielded no results, and the next day, 26 August 2023, divers found the body approximately 30 metres from the shore.

And on 25 August 2022 the Zaporizhzhia NPP for the first time in history was disconnected from Ukraine’s power grid: Russian shelling damaged the last operating 750 kV high-voltage line “Dniprovska” at that time.

That was 25 August for Mykolaiv and the Korabelnyi district: from the city’s first ship and street football to a minibus that had to be pushed by passengers, port everyday life and the war that brought missile strikes to residential neighborhoods.
