"Dräger" showed 0.32‰
In Kyiv, an intoxicated BMW driver, according to investigators, during an overtaking maneuver drove onto the shoulder and hit two cyclists — a 44-year-old father and his 17-year-old son. The teenager died at the scene; the man was hospitalized.
The incident was reported by the press service of the Kyiv City prosecutor’s office and the communications department of the capital’s police.
The road traffic accident occurred at about 15:30 on July 18, 2026 on Boryspil Highway in the Darnytskyi district. The father and son were riding their bicycles on the shoulder in the same direction from Kyiv to the village of Shchaslyve.
According to the investigation, the 27-year-old BMW driver decided to overtake another vehicle on the right, crossed a solid road marking line and drove onto the shoulder. There the car ran over the cyclists who were riding ahead.
After the impact the BMW moved into the second lane and collided with a KIA Rio driving-school car. From the sustained injuries the 17-year-old cyclist died at the scene of the accident, and his 44-year-old father was taken to hospital.
A check showed that the BMW driver was in a state of alcohol intoxication. The “Dräger” device recorded 0.32 per mille of alcohol.
The man was detained pursuant to Article 208 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine. He was notified of suspicion under Part 3 of Article 286-1 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine — violation of traffic rules by a person in a state of intoxication that caused a person’s death.
The prosecutor’s office filed a motion with the court to impose a preventive measure on the driver in the form of detention without the right to post bail.
If found guilty, the man faces up to 10 years in prison with deprivation of the right to drive vehicles for a term of 5 to 10 years.
The pre-trial investigation is being conducted by investigators of the Main Directorate of the National Police in Kyiv.
