At a crosswalk — even on a green light — it's still dangerous: in Mykolaiv, a drunk driver hit a man
1.91‰ and running a red light: a pedestrian was hospitalized after a traffic accident
A report about a road traffic accident at the intersection of Bohoyavlenskyi Avenue and Parkova Street in Mykolaiv was received on the 102 emergency line at around 20:00 on 22 May 2026.
According to preliminary information, the driver of a Renault Kangoo struck a 36-year-old man who was crossing the roadway at a designated crossing on a green traffic light. Police say the car driver reportedly ran a red light. As a result of the crash, the pedestrian sustained serious bodily injuries and is currently in a medical facility.
While documenting the accident, law enforcement officers detected signs of alcohol intoxication in the 53-year-old driver. After testing, he recorded 1.91 per mille of alcohol. Police investigators notified the driver of suspicion under Part 2 of Article 286-1 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine – violation of road safety rules or vehicle operation by a person operating a vehicle while intoxicated, which caused the victim serious bodily injury. Under the charged article, the driver faces up to three years of imprisonment with deprivation of the right to drive vehicles for a term of five to eight years.
The issue of choosing a preventive measure for the suspect is currently being decided. The pre-trial investigation is ongoing.
