The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan summoned the Russian ambassador, Mikhail Yevdokimov, after a Russian attack on a SOCAR gas station in the village of Nechayane in Mykolaiv Oblast. The Russian diplomat was lodged a strong protest and handed a formal note.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan reported the diplomatic demarche on July 6, 2026. The cause was a strike by Russian drones on a civilian facility on the evening of July 5, 2026.

The SOCAR gas station, located at Odeska Street, 2-A, in the village of Nechayane, was attacked by Russian Shahed-type strike drones “Shahed”. According to SOCAR Energy Ukraine, three drones struck the station’s premises, damaging the administrative building. Station employees were in shelter during the air raid, so there were no casualties. The company noted that more serious consequences were avoided thanks to security measures implemented in advance, adherence to safety procedures during the alarm, and the presence of a protective structure.

According to the Azerbaijani news agency APA, Russian forces carried out two strikes on the gas station: the first was recorded at 19:16, the second at 19:33. The station is located approximately 30 kilometers from Mykolaiv on the road toward Odesa. The Azerbaijani MFA emphasized that this is not the first Russian strike on facilities of the state oil company SOCAR on Ukrainian territory. Previously the company’s oil depot and a gas distribution compressor station in the Odesa Oblast were attacked.

Previous attacks caused significant material damage to the facilities, and SOCAR employees were injured. In particular, during the strike on the oil depot on the night of August 8, 2025, four employees were injured. Another attack on that facility occurred on August 18, 2025.

The Azerbaijani side stated that the continuation of such strikes, despite repeated warnings and official appeals to Russia, indicates their deliberate nature. During the meeting with Mikhail Yevdokimov, Azerbaijani representatives also recalled previous Russian airstrikes that damaged the buildings of the Azerbaijani embassy in Kyiv and the country’s honorary consulate in Kharkiv. They demanded that the Russian side conduct a full investigation of all the incidents mentioned, provide official explanations, and fulfill international obligations to protect civilian facilities, diplomatic missions, and consular institutions.

They said that men were tortured and effectively killed while in the custody of Russian law enforcement. The Russian authorities rejected these accusations. Afterwards, searches were carried out in Baku at the editorial office of Sputnik Azerbaijan, its leaders and other Russian citizens were detained, which led to a new exchange of grievances between the countries.
