Historic step: Ukraine issued the first electronic prescription for medical cannabis

In Vinnytsia June 11, 2026 electronic prescriptions for medicines containing medical cannabis were officially issued and redeemed for patients for the first time in Ukraine.

The first to receive such preparations were a patient with multiple sclerosis and two veterans with chronic and phantom pain syndrome following amputations.

The prescriptions were written by neurologists of the Vinnytsia Regional Clinical Psychoneurological Hospital named after Academician O. I. Yushchenko.

These are cannabidiol-based preparations. They are used for pain relief, reducing anxiety, and treating a range of neurological conditions.

According to doctors, such preparations do not cause euphoria, intoxication, or dependence, and are prescribed to patients for whom other treatment methods did not help.

The medicines are produced individually according to the prescription and dispensed through specialized pharmacies.

The MOH previously explained that an electronic prescription for medicinal products based on medical cannabis can be issued in the electronic health system under the program “Narcotic (psychotropic) medicinal products”.

At the same time, it is important to note: this is not about the free sale of cannabis, but about controlled medical use as prescribed by a doctor.

For veterans and patients with chronic pain, phantom limb pain after amputations, and neurological disorders, this may become an additional treatment option when other methods have not produced adequate results.
