Killed a neighborhood dog and fled: police in Mykolaiv detained a 33-year-old resident
A yard dog died from blows: residents called the police on the neighbor
In Mykolaiv, law enforcement officers detained a man suspected of cruel treatment of an animal. The incident occurred on the evening of 3 May 2026 in the entrance of an apartment building on Pivdenna Street.
A local resident contacted the police and reported that his neighbor was behaving erratically and had killed a dog. Patrol officers arrived at the scene and were met by the residents of the entrance. People told the officers that their neighbor, allegedly while intoxicated, inflicted fatal injuries on a yard dog and then disappeared. Later the police located a man matching the description. Since he could pose a danger to himself and others, the patrol officers applied handcuffs to him in accordance with Art.45 of the Law of Ukraine “On the National Police”.
According to the Mykolaiv region police, the suspect turned out to be a 33-year-old man who had previously come to the attention of law enforcement. It was preliminarily established that he inflicted numerous blows on the animal. From the injuries sustained the dog, which lived near the building, died. During investigative actions, the police seized a fragment of a knife which, according to the police, the suspect discarded. The final cause of the animal’s death is to be determined after the veterinarian’s conclusion and the appropriate examinations.
Investigators of Police Department No.2 of the Mykolaiv District Directorate detained the man in procedural order — under Art.208 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine. A criminal proceeding has also been opened on signs of an offense provided for in Part 3 of Art.299 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine — cruel treatment of an animal committed with particular cruelty.
The penalty under the article provides for punishment of up to eight years imprisonment. It is currently being decided whether to notify the detainee of suspicion.
This case again raises questions not only about responsibility for cruelty to animals, but also about the safety of residents in their own entrances. If a person who is intoxicated is capable of such violence against a defenseless animal, the community has the right to demand a prompt and principled response from law enforcement.
