After Russian shelling at the port of Chornomorsk: a 6,000-ton sunflower oil tank was destroyed
Booms have been deployed and the stormwater drainage system has been sealed off; analyses of the waterbody will determine the extent of the damage
On Monday, 27 April, the State Environmental Inspectorate of the South-Western District reported a spill of sunflower oil in the waters of the port of Chornomorsk following a Russian strike.
According to the agency, the attack damaged facilities of the commercial seaport, and the fire destroyed a tank with a capacity of 6 thousand tons of oil.
To contain the contamination and prevent its further spread, booms and barriers were installed and the stormwater drainage was blocked.
“Soil contamination has not been recorded, since the area has a concrete surface. At the same time, an oil leak into the port waters has been detected. An oil slick approximately 400 by 200 meters has formed on the water surface,” the State Environmental Inspectorate of the South-Western District reported.
Specialists took seawater samples for laboratory tests, which will determine the level of contamination and the extent of the damage.
