Russia struck a humanitarian aid distribution point in Komyshuvakha: preliminarily, 18 people killed
The search and rescue operation is ongoing; the death toll may still change
A series of Russian airstrikes on Komyshuvakha in Zaporizhzhia Oblast hit a school where local residents were receiving humanitarian aid. In his address, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy cited preliminary information on the attack’s impact: 18 people were killed and another five were injured.
According to the head of state, the settlement had been bombed since early morning. A second strike followed the initial air bomb attack: Russian forces dropped another nine bombs on a shelter where people were taking refuge.
No classes were being held in the school building. It was being used for humanitarian purposes — aid was distributed there every week to residents who remained in Komyshuvakha. Zelenskyy stressed that the Russian side could not have been unaware either of the building’s purpose or of the local residents’ regular visits.
Search and rescue operations at the strike site are ongoing. Rescuers, military personnel, and special services staff are searching for people and clearing the aftermath of the attack. According to the president, the work is difficult, and the casualty figures may still be revised.
The head of state expressed his condolences to the families of those killed. In his view, the strike shows that Russia has no intention of pursuing a genuine de-escalation or a just peace.
In this context, Volodymyr Zelenskyy mentioned the humanitarian operation in Oleshky. He believes that it could have created the conditions for further steps toward peace, but the latest attack, in his assessment, points to the opposite attitude on the Russian side.
The president called on international partners to respond firmly to the strike and to continue supporting Ukraine. He emphasized that efforts must now be focused on protecting human lives.
