A dog tied up in the rain without shelter: police are investigating a video from Mykolaiv region

A dog tied up in the mud and rain with no shelter in sight — footage from Berezanka, in Mykolaiv Region, has been shared on social media. The police have launched an investigation into possible animal cruelty.

Law enforcement officers came across the post on October 31 while monitoring social media. The Main Directorate of the National Police in Mykolaiv Region reported this on its website, mk.npu.gov.ua. The agency says the circumstances shown in the video may indicate that the dog was mistreated.

The information was entered into the Unified Register of Reports and Notifications of Criminal Offenses and Other Incidents. Officers from the Police Station No. 8 of the Mykolaiv District Police Department were assigned to investigate. They are establishing the dog’s exact location and the circumstances of the incident. A legal assessment will be made once their work is complete.

The police also reminded the public that the law provides for liability for animal cruelty:

• administrative liability — under Article 89 of the Code of Ukraine on Administrative Offenses;
• criminal liability — under Article 299 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.
