In Mykolaiv, protection of animals in criminal proceedings is being strengthened

July 22, 2026 the executive committee of the Mykolaiv City Council approved a decision that expands the powers of the Municipal Enterprise “Center for Animal Protection” in cases of animal cruelty.

According to the city council, in June representatives of the National Police appealed to local self-government bodies asking them to ensure representation of the territorial community’s interests in the relevant criminal proceedings.

“Since a specialized municipal enterprise that deals with animal protection, their capture and sterilization operates in Mykolaiv, it is proposed to grant it the authority to represent the community’s interests in such cases”, — noted the deputy director of the Department of Municipal Services Ihor Nabatov.

From now on the Municipal Enterprise “Center for Animal Protection” will be able to participate in criminal proceedings, cooperate with investigative bodies and represent the community’s interests in courts.

The corresponding powers will also be officially enshrined in the municipal enterprise’s statute. The city council notes that the decision should help ensure a more prompt response to cases of animal cruelty.
