At his own birthday party, a man shot and killed his son in Mykolaiv Oblast

A father in the Kazanka community has been notified of suspicion of intentional murder

At night on October 9, in one of the villages in the Kazanka community in Mykolaiv region, a father shot his 42-year-old son with a shotgun. The victim died at the scene. According to Mykolaiv Region Police, the 65-year-old man was detained and notified that he was suspected of intentional murder.

The suspect’s 40-year-old wife reported her son’s murder to the police. The following immediately arrived at the scene:

an investigative and operational team;
officers from Police Department No. 1 of the Bashtanka District Police Department;
a forensic laboratory;
a forensic medical expert.

According to the circumstances established by police, the family was celebrating the father’s birthday. While drinking alcohol, an argument broke out between him and his son. The man went into another room, picked up a shotgun, and fired at his son. The shot struck the neck and torso, and the victim died at the scene from his injuries. The father then left the shotgun in the yard and returned to the house.

Investigators detained the man under Article 208 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine. Under the procedural supervision of the Kazanka Department of the Bashtanka District Prosecutor’s Office, he was notified that he was suspected under Part 1 of Article 115 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine — intentional murder. The man faces up to 15 years in prison.

Police seized two shotguns at the scene. Preliminary findings indicate that one of them was used to fire the fatal shot. Law enforcement officers are still establishing the origin of the unregistered firearm.

The court will decide on a preventive measure for the detainee soon. The pre-trial investigation is ongoing.
