A large-scale flushing of the water supply networks in Mykolaiv is planned to begin on 2 November. Hyperchlorination will be used for this: the chlorine content in the water and the usual doses of this disinfectant will be increased threefold.

The reason for this cleansing was discussed at a staff meeting at the city hall on 5 October. The mayor, Oleksandr Sienkevych, said that the drinking water in the city had been tested by several laboratories. At the outlet from the water utility’s treatment facilities it meets drinking standards. However, at the city’s control sampling points its quality deteriorates in almost half of the cases. These results give grounds to believe that the water is being contaminated by the city water supply networks.

The director of “Mykolaivvodokanal” Hennadiy Izyumov stated that currently the water quality in the city meets drinking standards, but clarified:

“There are deviations in oxidation, but they are insignificant.”

Because of the increased chlorine content, the mayor urged residents to use tap water with caution. In particular, Oleksandr Sienkevych advised refraining from hot baths, since chlorine evaporates into the air.

According to the water utility director, to carry out these measures the enterprise needs an additional 28 tons of chlorine. Their purchase will cost 1.6 million UAH. The tender to purchase the disinfectant has already been announced.
