In Odesa, a court will hear the case of a 45-year-old man accused of torturing a cellmate in the Odesa pre-trial detention center. The indictment was sent to court by the Odesa Regional Prosecutor’s Office.

According to the investigation, the man, who had a prior conviction, was held in the pre-trial detention center as a defendant in another criminal proceeding. In May of this year, a former employee of the district territorial center for recruitment and social support was placed in his cell.

After learning about his cellmate’s previous workplace, the man began provoking conflicts, humiliating him and beating him. The investigation believes that the accused sought to punish the victim for actions the latter allegedly committed during mobilization measures.

The man knocked the cellmate’s bedding off the bed and ordered him to sleep on the floor. According to the prosecutor’s office, he also forced the victim to perform humiliating acts and recorded everything on a mobile phone.

The accused’s actions have been qualified as intentionally causing severe physical pain and moral suffering with the aim of punishing a person for acts they committed or are suspected of. He is charged with torture under Part 1 of Article 127 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.

The accused currently remains in the Odesa SIZO. The pre-trial investigation was conducted by the territorial police unit.
