An official historical reference states that it was on 22 September 1930 that Mykolaiv was separated as a distinct administrative and economic unit. This happened during a large-scale reorganization of the administrative system of Soviet Ukraine — seven years before the appearance of a separate Mykolaiv Oblast.
22 September 1937: the Mykolaiv Oblast was formed
It was on this day that the Mykolaiv Oblast was created — in 2026 this date marks exactly 89 years. The Encyclopedia of Modern Ukraine confirms that initially the new oblast included Mykolaiv, Kherson, Kirove — now Kropyvnytskyi — and 38 districts. The oblast’s territory was then significantly larger than it is today, and its borders were changed repeatedly afterward.
22 September 2012: the Korabelnyi District joined the big city celebration
On that day Mykolaiv simultaneously celebrated the 223rd anniversary of the city and the 75th anniversary of the oblast. Korabelov.info reported that kindergartens of the Korabelnyi District presented the district at a city-wide exhibition with their crafts and compositions. The ceremonial opening of Mykolaiv’s first skatepark in Victory Park was also scheduled for 22 September.
22 September 2022: 9 S-300 rockets were launched at Mykolaiv
At around 00:15 Russian forces carried out a massive strike on Mykolaiv. Local authorities reported 9 S-300 rockets, of which 2 did not explode. Residential buildings, a gas pipeline, a water pipeline, the drama theatre, the cinema courtyard and administrative buildings were damaged; there were no fatalities. Korabelov.info wrote that after the water pipeline was destroyed one of the craters about 5 meters deep quickly filled with water.
