Russia threatens to intensify strikes on Kyiv after a massive attack on Moscow

The Russian Ministry of Defense has announced its intention to intensify strikes on Kyiv after a massive drone and missile attack on Moscow and the Moscow Region. The Russian agency claims that its forces will continue to attack military targets in the Ukrainian capital, presenting this as a response to strikes by Ukrainian forces on targets in Russia.

The Russian ministry also claimed that the aim of the attack was to disrupt voting in the elections to the State Duma of the Russian Federation. The Russian side has not provided independent evidence for this version. The same explanation was voiced by the mayor of Moscow, Sergei Sobyanin.

According to the Russian Ministry of Defense, over the course of a day Russian air defenses reportedly destroyed 1951 Ukrainian drones and 8 “Flamingo” cruise missiles. The figures provided by the Russian military department do not have independent confirmation.

The consequences of the attack were not limited to statements about air defenses. Russian authorities and media reported that several drones reached the territory of Moscow. At the Moscow Oil Refinery one of the facilities was damaged. Near Kapotnya a plastics manufacturing plant was also on fire, which, according to these reports, was damaged by Russian air defenses.
