The U.S. International Development Finance Corporation DFC approved a loan of €85 million, or about $97.5 million, to Ukraine’s largest private energy company DTEK. The financing will be directed to a battery energy storage systems project.

DFC and DTEK reported this on 16 September 2026. The information was also confirmed by the agency Reuters. According to the company, this is the largest DFC debt deal for Ukraine’s energy sector since Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022.

The financing relates to a portfolio of energy storage systems with a total capacity:

  • 200 MW capacity;
  • 400 MWh capacity;
  • six sites in Ukraine.

The systems are already in operation and use technology from the American company Fluence. They can respond to changes in the power grid within milliseconds, helping to regulate frequency, balance fluctuations, and support system stability.

According to DFC, the stored energy is enough to power about 600,000 households for two hours. Reuters specifies that the installations are located, among other places, in Kyiv and Dnipropetrovsk region. They were developed against the backdrop of systematic Russian attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure.

DTEK CEO Maksym Tymchenko said the loan will allow the company to direct more of its own capital toward further construction of battery systems and other energy projects.

“The financial part is very important to me, but far more important is the signal that DFC is ready to support Ukraine and DTEK”, – said Tymchenko to Reuters.

According to him, the American corporation’s decision can also serve as a signal to other private investors that the risks of operating in Ukraine can be managed even during wartime.

DFC noted that the project should increase the resilience and stability of Ukraine’s power system, which continues to suffer Russian attacks. In addition to the Ukrainian energy project, the corporation’s board of directors on 16 September approved a total of more than $8 billion in new investments in various countries and sectors.

The DTEK battery systems project itself is estimated at roughly €125 million. The company says the complex was built in about six months instead of the typical 18-24 months for such projects.
