Paralympic gold, Mykolaiv's "Centaur" and massive shelling: what made September 14 memorable

From sporting victories to the ravages of war

14 September in the history of Mykolaiv and the Korablev District combined the fate of a well-known Mykolaiv scientist, the return of Paralympians with medals from London, a new combat boat built to a Mykolaiv design, a large-scale City Day celebration and one of the heavy nights of Russian shelling in 2022.

14 September 1947: long-serving rector Valeriy Dmytrovych Budak was born

In Korsun-Shevchenkivskyi the future scientist and long-time head of Mykolaiv University Valeriy Dmytrovych Budak was born. The Encyclopedia of Modern Ukraine confirms that he led the Mykolaiv Pedagogical Institute, and later the university since 1996, was a Doctor of Technical Sciences, professor, an academician of the NAPS of Ukraine and an honored figure of science and technology. Korabelov.info after his death in 2026 reminded that the scientist also held the title of Honorary Citizen of Mykolaiv.

14 September 2012: 9 Mykolaiv Paralympians returned from London

In Mykolaiv athletes were solemnly welcomed after the XIV Summer Paralympic Games. Korabelov.info reported that the Ukrainian national team included 9 representatives from Mykolaiv region who won 1 gold and 2 bronze medals. “Gold” was won by Hennadiy Boiko, the bronze medals by Yuliya Klymenko and Svitlana Kudelya. Representative of the Korablev District Denis Oleksandrovych Zhumela took 7th and 9th places in swimming; the athletes also asked to equip the SK “Vodoley” with a lift for wheelchair users.

14 September 2018: the first “Centaur” built to a Mykolaiv design was launched

In Kyiv the lead landing-assault craft of the type “Centaur” was launched. Project 58181 was developed by the Mykolaiv Research and Design Center for Shipbuilding. The craft was created for the Ukrainian Navy as a high-speed combat platform for transporting marines and performing special tasks; this event became one of the notable examples of Mykolaiv designers’ participation in the restoration of the Ukrainian naval fleet after 2014.

14 September 2019: Korablev joined the celebration of Mykolaiv’s 230th anniversary

Representatives of the Ocean plant, the Olvia port, PC “Korablev”, the Kulbakyno House of Culture, sports schools, libraries and other district institutions represented Korablev in the large program “Mykolaiv – it’s us!” and the Gala Parade on Soborna. The district organized exhibitions, creative performances, sports activities and master classes, becoming part of the large-scale celebration of the city’s 230th anniversary.

14 September 2022: Russians massively shelled all districts of Mykolaiv

At night Russian forces carried out a massive strike on Mykolaiv. Korabelov.info reported that all 4 districts of the city were damaged: more than 10 multi-storey buildings, 13 private houses, educational institutions, a veterinary hospital, enterprises and infrastructure; in one of the multi-storey buildings of the Korablev District an entrance became emergency. The police later confirmed damage to residential buildings, cars, an educational institution, a veterinary clinic and a state enterprise.

14 September 2024: Mykolaiv’s 235th anniversary was celebrated during the war

Despite martial law, in Mykolaiv a number of events were held for the city’s 235th anniversary. The central event was a march with the State Flag of Ukraine from the city council to Chestnut Square, led by athletes Maksym Mirza and Kateryna Honchar. That same day residents and representatives of Denmark joined a festive bike ride that ended near the “Danish Solidarity” square.

14 September 1939 Ukrainian-born aircraft designer Igor Ivanovich Sikorsky in the USA lifted his experimental helicopter VS-300 into the air; the rotor scheme he developed with one main and one tail rotor later became the classic configuration for helicopters. 14 September 1960 in Baghdad representatives of Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Venezuela founded the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries – OPEC.

14 September for Mykolaiv is not a story about current repairs or household problems. This date recalls the people who shaped the city’s development, sporting victories, the contribution of Mykolaiv shipbuilders, major city events and the war that left its destructive traces on the city.
