Divorce via smartphone: Diia has launched fully online divorce proceedings

In Ukraine, as of September 3, 2026, the service “Divorce Online” became available in the “Diia” app. After the completion of beta testing, the service became available to spouses who want to dissolve their marriage by mutual consent and do not have common underage children. This was officially reported by the Ministry of Justice of Ukraine.

The service can be used by adult citizens of Ukraine if both agree to the divorce, have a verified RNOKPP, Diia.Signature, an ID card or a biometric international passport, and their marriage record is contained in the State Register of Civil Status Acts. The procedure is carried out entirely online. One spouse fills out the application in the “Diia” app and chooses the date and time of a video conference with an official of the civil registry office (DRACS). The meeting can be scheduled no earlier than 1 month and 2 days after the application is submitted.

The other spouse receives a notification and has 12 hours to check their data, confirm it and sign the application using Diia.Signature. After that, information about both applicants is automatically checked in state registers. On the appointed day the husband and wife join the video conference with an official of the civil registry office (DRACS), confirm their desire to dissolve the marriage and once again certify the decision with Diia.Signature. The state registration of the divorce takes place after at least 1 month has passed since the date of application submission. Before registration the application can be withdrawn via the app.

The provided information stated that the application could be withdrawn no later than 4 hours before the video conference. At the same time, the official statement of the Ministry of Justice dated September 3, 2026 does not indicate such a restriction – the agency says that withdrawal is available until the state registration of the divorce is carried out. After the video conference, the electronic record of the divorce should appear in “Diia” for both former partners within 24 hours. Paper certificates will be sent separately to each person via “Ukrposhta” to the address specified in the application.

If the spouses have common underage children or one partner does not agree to the divorce, the new service cannot be used. In such cases, marriage is generally dissolved through court, except in certain situations provided for by law. The option to complete the divorce in person at the civil registry office remains available.
